Review:  Clearing Up Questions So You Can Confidently Pray in the Spirit

1 John 5:14-15 tells us,  “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”  The goal of this lesson is to clear up some questions about praying in the spirit so we can have confidence in our prayers.

The first question people ask is whether or not everyone who is baptized in the Holy Spirit prays in tongues.  The answer is yes.  Luke 11:13 says you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit if you ask for it.  Then you must begin to pray in the spirit.  The Holy Spirit will not move your lips for you.  You do not need to be perfect or pray and fast for it.  You simply ask and you will receive.  Praying in the spirit is the only one of the nine gifts that we have control over.  It is the gift that stirs up the rivers of living water in us and activates the other eight gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The second question is whether or not you can pray incorrectly as you pray in the spirit.  The answer is no.  Romans 8:26-28 tells us the Holy Spirit prays for us according to the perfect will of God when we don’t know how to pray.  It is always the perfect prayer since the Holy Spirit is interceding for us.  Can you see why it is such a precious gift?

The last question people struggle with is what do we do after we have prayed and it seems like we have not received an answer to our prayer?  In Mark 11, Jesus cursed the fig tree but it didn’t appear to die immediately.  The next day Jesus went into the temple and chased out the thieves and declared the temple should be a house of prayer.  When Jesus and the disciples came across the fig tree the next day, the fig tree was withered from the roots up.  So what does this mean for you and me?  When you have prayed for a situation, you should continue to pray in the spirit making yourself a house of prayer. You may not see an immediate physical manifestation, but if you stay in prayer the “thieves” in your life will be driven out and the problem will eventually die and wither away.

Prayer 1:  10 Minutes:

If there is any situation in your life that needs prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to pray through you for that situation.  The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us according to the will of God.  It is the perfect prayer and is always answered!
