Review:  Jesus – Our Rest, Liberation and Restoration

Colossians 2:16-17 tells us that the Sabbath days and years of jubilee are just pictures of what Jesus has done for us.  Leviticus 25 explains that every seventh year, the people were to rest from working.  Every fiftieth year was a year of jubilee, and was an additional year of rest.  In the fiftieth year, every slave was freed, every debt was cancelled, and everyone was restored and given back his or her inheritance.  The year of jubilee came to be known as the year of favor and the acceptable year of the Lord.

Today we no longer have to wait for the seventh day of the week, the seventh year, nor the fiftieth year.  Jesus is our true rest and jubilee.  Every day is a day of rest and a year of jubilee.  In the Old Testament, they blew the ram’s horn to proclaim the year of jubilee.   On the last Sabbath before Jesus’ death, Jesus proclaimed in Luke 4:18-19 that He was the true rest and the acceptable year of the Lord.   When Jesus shouted, “finished” on the cross, that was the true sounding of the ram’s horn.  Jesus was proclaiming that every sin was paid for, every debt was paid, every sickness and disease was healed, and we were all restored to a life of prosperity.

So what does it mean to enter into rest today?  It means that we can believe that Jesus has finished all of the work to heal us, protect us and prosper us.  We don’t need to trust in our own efforts.  We can trust that Jesus has restored everything that the first Adam lost in the garden.  We don’t need to go through religious exercises to try and get God to heal us or provide for us.  Jesus declared that all of the work to heal and prosper us was completed on the cross.  Every sin debt as well as financial debt was cancelled on the cross.  All we need to do in the New Testament is trust that Jesus has done all of this for us.  When we rest in what He has already accomplished for us, we can live a life free from worry and stress.  God will never let us down.  Every business deal, every connection, everything we will ever need to live a victorious life was completed on the cross.  When a trial comes up in our lives, we don’t need to strive in our own efforts to overcome the trial.  We can trust that God saw this trial before we were ever born.  Jesus finished everything we will ever need.  We can simply pray, “Father, I’m trusting in you. Because of Jesus, everything has already been accomplished.  I am healed, prosperous and protected.”   This is the life of Christ that we can now enjoy.  Jesus is our true rest, liberation and restoration.  Praise God!
