Review:  Jesus Is Our Mercy Seat

The Old Testament contains types and shadows of the real thing.  The Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat were pictures of Jesus and the work of Jesus on the cross.  The lid on top of the Ark was made out of solid gold and included the Cherubim.  Gold represents divinity.  This is a picture of Jesus’ work on the cross.  Inside the Mercy Seat are the tablets of stone, the golden pot of manna and Aaron’s rod that budded.  These three items represented man’s rebellion against God.  God’s desire has always been to cover man’s rebellion with the work of Jesus.

Romans 3:25 clearly says that God made Jesus to be a propitiation for us.  The Greek work for propitiation literally means an atoning victim, the lid of the Ark, the mercy seat.  So now God has forever covered our sins with Jesus.  We are now seated with Christ Jesus on the Mercy Seat.  We will never be judged by God for our sins.  When God looks at us, He sees us through the blood of Jesus.  When we know we wont be judged, we can come boldly to the throne of grace and find mercy and grace (Heb 4:16).

Mercy means we don’t get what we deserve.  Jesus was judged on the cross for our sins.  Grace means we get the favor of God even though we don’t deserve it. The enemy will try and tell you, “You really blew it this time.  How can you expect to be blessed by God?”  That’s exactly why it is called grace.  Praise God!

Jesus has become our mercy seat.  The blood of Jesus was sprinkled once so that mercy and grace always flow freely in our lives.
